New England Fights 35: Wicked Season – Live Results

We’re live from a packed Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine bringing you live play-by-play of NEF 35! There are 12 scheduled fights on the card, including five professional bouts and an amateur title lightweight title fight between champ (4-0) Pat Kelly and (2-2) Ed Forlenza. Amateur debut at catchweight at 160 lbs between Nostos MMA’s Andrew Brown and Independent Chris Lachcik

Round #1: Brown in the red corner, Lachcik in the blue. Brown quick with leg kicks, hits Lachcik hard with two shots. Gets the takedown, from half guard landing hard shots. Brown on top, both fighters hand fighting. Brown working on position, lands two hard shots on top. Working the back, hitting hard to the liver. Brown looking for the pass into mount, into mount. Barrage of punches, Brown in total control. Brown going armbar but still landing shots to the liver. Fight ends with less than 10 seconds remaining. Brown via armbar.

Amateur featherweight bout between CMBJJ’s (1-0) Joe Howard and Independent (0-1) Jordan Young

Round #1: Howard in the red corner, Young in the blue. Howard catches Young quickly, fighters exchange. Fighters in the wizzer position, Young finishes a takedown. Howard reverses position, met by a transition by Young. Young in mount, working to posture up. Young landing from mount, still unable to posture up. Howard manages to scramble and into full guard. 30 seconds remaining, Young reverses and gains guard. Round #1 10-9 Young

Round #2: Young catches a right body kick and gets the early takedown. Working from guard, leg over and into mount. Young unable to lock feet, loose position. Howard working to get out of the position, Young not accomplishing anything. Howard rolls into back mount, Young secures a rear naked choke. Young with the second round RNC finish, 1:50.

Amateur featherweight debut between Young’s MMA prospect Shawn Costigan and Independent David Hills

Round #1: Warm welcome for Bangor’s own Shawn Costigan. Costigan in the red, Hills in the blue. Hills with an early body kick, working from a karate stance. Hills hops up into a standing guillotine. Costigan with a hard right hand sending Hills to the mat, follows it up by TKO finish at 52 seconds.

Amateur catchweight contest at 150 lbs bout between CMBJJ’s (1-1) Taylor Bartlett and First Class MMA’s (1-1) Jacob Deppmeyer

Round #1: Deppmeyer in the blue, Bartlett in the red. Bartlett looking to set up his offense with kicks, countered with hard shots from Deppmeyer . Deppmeyer’s right eye cut, hits Bartlett with a hard right straight connecting. Deppmeyer looking for a standing guillotine. Deppmeyer lands knees in the clinch, Bartlett seems phased, eats another hard right straight. Deppmeyer continues to land hard knees to the body in the clinch. Deppmeyer with underhooks, now working a guillotine. Right hook by Deppmeyer, out landing in every exchange. Deppmeyer with a convincing 10-9 round 1.

Round #2: Deppmeyer coming out swinging, more knees from the clinch. Fire fight between the two, Bartlett’s takedown attempt stuffed. Deppmeyer stands and gets hit hard three times, followed up by a Bartlett takedown. Bartlett working from top position, unable to land too many shots. Knees high, Bartlett working from rubber guard, still unable to land. Deppmeyer stands and lands a quick takedown, high lock by Bartlett. Bartlett looking to work a submission in the dying seconds of the round. Bartlett winning this round by a narrow margin 19-19.

Round #3: Deppmeyer looking for the takedown, Bartlett able to stuff the attempt. Deppmeyer appears to be fatigued, eating shots in the center of the cage.  Deppmeyer attempts another weak takedown, stuffed. Deppmeyer landing shots with Bartlett against the cage, now Bartlett working a takedown and succeeds. Bartlett susceptible to a triangle from guard, again unable to mount an offense on top. Deppmeyer still looking triangle, now as Bartlett stands up liable to an armbar. Last 10 seconds, both fighters land. Awaiting a tough decision, judges taking their time. Fight scored a draw, judges score the contest 29-28 Bartlett, 29-27 Deppmeyer, 28-28.

Amateur lightweight bout between Nostos MMA’s (1-0) Zac Richard and Independent (0-5) Clifford Redman

Round #1: Redman in the blue, Richard in the red. Redman the much shorter fighter, whizzer to a takedown for Richard. In mount landing hard, transitions to back mount. RNC attempt, now into mount. Back mount, into side control. Landing more hard shots and earning the TKO finish at 1:38.

Amateur welterweight bout between Kenny’s MMA competitor (0-3) David Hart and First Class MMA’s (1-0) Christian Barrett

Round #1: Barrett in the blue, Hart in red. Barrett with an obvious size advantage as we near the beginning of this fight. Barrett with an almost instant takedown after tapping gloves. Working from half guard, Hart sinks a guillotine from the bottom. Barrett out, gains top mount. Barrett lands and Hart transitions to his back. Barrett fighting hands, landing shots from on top, back flattened now. Strange decision by the referee to end the fight as Barrett is landing small, minute punches and staring at the official. Barrett by 1st round TKO at 1:15.

Amateur lightweight title fight between champ and Young’s MMA’s own (4-0) Pat Kelly and challenger, Juniko’s (2-2) Ed Forlenza

Round #1: Bangor’s own Kelly set to defend his title in his retirement fight, raucous reception as he enters the cage. Forlenza at a height and reach advantage. Forlenza working early leg kicks, Kelly swinging for the fences. Exchanging, good head movement by the champ. Forlenza working from the clinch, looking to take the fight to the ground. Takedown by Forlenza but Kelly attempting a guillotine. Forlenza on the back, working an RNC. Forlenza landing hard blows from back mount. Top mount for Forlenza, working the feet and transitions to back mount. More hard shots, spoiling Kelly’s retirement. 2:42 round #1, TKO win and new NEF lightweight champion (3-2) Ed Forlenza.

Pro featherweight bout between Team Smog’s (1-6) Zenon Herrera and The Choi Institute’s (3-7) Ernesto Ornelas

Round #1: Ornelas in blue, Herrera in red. Herrera against the cage early, both fighters working knees. Center of the cage, Herrera grabs a kick and looks takedown. Ornelas pulls towards the cage, working dominant position. Each fighters with underhooks, Ornelas gets both and a trip takedown. Ornelas on top, working side control. Ornelas working for mount, Herrera stuffing the attempts. Fighters standing, Zenon looking for a guillotine from the clinch. They break, and Ornelas slams Herrera hard to the ground. Ornelas again working to get to mount, Herrera holding him in place. Herrera attempting a triangle from the bottom, Ornelas landing hard shots on top. Ornelas in the final minute of the round on top, stack guard, now into side control. Ornelas with a 10-9 round #1.

Round #2: Ornelas with two hard straights, Herrera with multiple kicks landing air. Herrera gets a wizzer, on top but electing to stand. Herrera from back crucifix, and fighters exchange positions. Herrera pulls guard on an attempted guillotine. Ornelas on his feet, looking to strike and pouncing back to guard. Back mount for Ornelas and Herrera scrambles. Tight guillotine for Herrera, pulling hard on the neck ultimately losing the choke. Ornelas from guard working to advance position, now into half. Shots landing from the top attempting to pass. Almost every attempt by Ornelas to pass are being denied. Final minute of the round, Ornelas continuing to work from top control. Ornelas 20-18.

Round #3: Herrera with a telegraphed takedown attempt. Referee with another strange decision of calling a guillotine finish for Ernesto Herrera. The win comes at 25 seconds of this third round.

Pro lightweight bout between Young’s MMA and former champ (4-0) Josh Harvey and Team Knockout’s (15-80) Jay Ellis

Pre-fight specifics: Ellis in blue, eager to get into the cage. Hometown Harvey is getting lots of attention from the crowd as he makes his return to the NEF cage. Ellis runs across the cage to hug his opponent before they get going. Ellis described as a “journeyman”.

Round #1: Ellis gets slammed hard after throwing two quick kicks. Harvey on the back and Ellis lands a front flip to avoid the submission. Referee again makes a questionable decision to end the fight after Ellis is caught in a choke and slams one hand to the mat. This fight ends by triangle choke at 30 seconds.

Pro lightweight bout between Young’s MMA’s (3-1) C.J. Ewer and The Choi Institute’s (1-0) Caleb Hall

Round #1: Hall in blue, Ewer in the red gloves. Hall opening up with leg kicks, controlling distance. Hall landing a quick double, into side control. Looking for a kimura, Ewer scrambles. Hall in a head and arm choke, now guillotine. Ewer gets up and the crowd goes wild. Ewer dropped by a hard right hand, tenacity to withstand the punishment but Hall in half guard. Hall working a d’Arce and ending the fight by submission at 2:35 of the first round.

Co-main event between pro welterweights (16-9) Ryan Sanders and (10-6) Armando Montoya

Round #1: Montoya in blue, Bangor’s Sanders in red. Sanders working leg kicks, Montoya moving forward. Eye poke by Sanders early, Montoya clearly in some discomfort. Sanders landing kicks in combination, Montoya countering. Sanders has Montoya against the cage, standing guillotine. Montoya defending the attempts to take the fight to the mat. Now Montoya looking to take the fight to the ground and stuffed. Guillotine attempt by Sanders is defended. Sanders setting up offense with kicks, Montoya has a double leg takedown stuffed. Sanders pulls a tight guillotine, Montoya taps. Sanders by guillotine at 4:10.

Main event between pro lightweights (7-8) Jon Lemke of Titan Athletics and (5-2) Aaron Lacey of Young’s MMA

Round #1: Lemke in blue, Lacey in the red corner. Both orthodox fighters, Lacey works a quick takedown attempt. Successful single leg, Lemke shoots back up. Lemke working a kimura, now Lacey on top. Working to push out of half guard and into mount. Scrambles into back mount, Lacey on the mat attempting a RNC and succeeding. Aaron Lacey by rear naked choke at 1:59.

Amateur fights between heavyweights Roger Ewer vs. Jason Hanley, 180 lbs catchweights Jordan Norman vs. Brandon Schwinck, lightweights Jesse Fitzsimmons vs. AJ Morales, and bantamweights Nate Boucher vs. Joshua Greenlaw were cancelled. Professional bout between (2-3) Crowsneck Boutin and (0-0) Mark Gardner was also scratched last minute.
