Jon Jones: Who’s Next for the Greatest of All-Time?

Adding to his win total Saturday night, Jon Jones (25-1, 1 NC) continues to cement his legacy as the sport’s greatest of all-time in the minds of fans and pundits alike. His career stat line includes three title reigns, ten title defenses and six of seven spots amongst the top 10 all-time UFC striking metric rankings. With such a close fight and win over one of the heaviest hitters in the division in Thiago Santos (21-7), who could be next for “Bones” Jones?

Coming off a win over former UFC middleweight champ Luke Rockhold (16-5) in Rockhold’s debut at 205 lbs, the former KSW light heavyweight champ is certainly poised for a title shot and the timing couldn’t be better. While Błachowicz did lose his fight previous to Saturday’s title challenger Santos; however, he had been riding a four fight win streak and positions nicely to face Jones later on in the year.

Since joining the promotion following a win on season one of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series Brazil last summer, Walker’s finished Khalil Rountree, Justin Ledet and Misha Cirkunov all in under a combined three minutes. His wild style resulted in a post-fight shoulder injury following the 38-second TKO finish of Cirkunov in March, which could position a title shot return with Jones this fall.

However unlikely a trilogy may be, Cormier and Jones running it back to cap off 2019 is a fight fan’s dream. In their two previous meetings pay-per-view ratings stood at 800,000 (UFC 182) and 860,000 (UFC 214) according to Tapology. With Jones’ wish to clear out the light heavyweight division and Cormier’s continued talk of retirement, not to mention looming rematch with Stipe Miocic at UFC 241 in August, the likelihood that the pairing comes to fruition is slim.
