On Thursday, the UFC made official two bouts scheduled for the promotion’s debut in New Brunswick. The main event will see top 10 light heavyweights #2 (15-2) Volkan Oezdemir and #9 (30-13) Anthony Smith competing in a potential number one contender eliminator. Also announced, heavyweights Canadian (7-1) Arjan Bhullar and Brazilian (6-1) Marcelo Golm will square off at the new Downtown Events Centre on October 27.

Oezdemir was scheduled to face Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 227; however, the fight was cancelled due to injuries to both fighters. Oezdemir’s last foray in the cage came by way of title challenge at UFC 220 in January against Daniel Cormier, a fight which ended in the second round via TKO win for the champion. Since joining the UFC in 2017, “No Time” compiled a quick series of 3 wins against ranked opponents including first round knockouts over Jimi Manuwa and Misha Cirkunov. Smith, who’s been dubbed a “legend killer” of late, has beaten former light heavyweight champions Rashad Evans and Shogun Rua since moving up from middleweight earlier this spring following a loss to Thiago Santos.

Heavyweights Bhullar and Golm both sit at 1-1 in their young careers. Bhullar last competed at UFC on Fox 29 in April, losing by omoplata to Adam Wieczorek. Golm lost by unanimous decision against Tim Johnson at UFC Fight Night 125 in February in his last trip to the Octagon. Both fighters’ possess a combined eight knockouts over 13 professional wins in what should play out as a fun contest for the Canadian fans.
